The Aiken-Augusta Chapter was chartered in Aiken, South Carolina, in June,1952, by three women, Mrs. Mildred Brown, Mrs. Elizabeth (Betty) Peterson, and Mrs. Ellen Brooks, who were dedicated to Delta’s traditions and envisioned an organization of college women pledged to serious endeavor and community service in the Central Savannah River Area (CSRA).
In the year of her establishment, the Aiken-Augusta Alumnae Chapter joined other chapters throughout the nation in having as its purpose to establish and maintain high standards of morality and scholarship among women. The chapter was a member of the Southern Region. In 1960, the directive was given by the National President, Soror Jean Noble to create a new region, the South Atlantic Region. South Carolina became a part of this region.
As the sorority grew and as the need for public awareness and service in ever-widening areas grew, there became a need to create separate chapters. On October 14, 1978, the Aiken Alumnae Chapter elected Soror Mary Ella Brown to serve as its first president and began meeting independently.
Over a period of 55 years, under the leadership of capable officers, sorors have conducted social action programs, supported needy individuals and families, sponsored Founders Day, May Week, and Jabberwock programs, awarded scholarships and supported community organizations and their activities. The Chapter has had members represented at the State and National level of the sorority, and the members acting as advisors to the local undergraduate chapter Rho Lambda at the University of South Carolina in Aiken.
The Aiken Alumnae Chapter has consistently planned and executed programs in alignment with the Five Point Thrust of the Grand Chapter. Through innovative programs and projects, the Chapter continues to emphasize community service and stress the importance of academics and scholarships. The Aiken Alumnae Chapter looks to the future with confidence, determination, and dedication. Together with the talents and abilities possessed by its members, the Chapter continues to enlighten, enable, and uplift our community.
